Our history: Serve Mercer County started in 2016 as an idea, a simple idea that a few people who are determined to make a difference in their community by simply serving others can truly change the world. Serve Mercer County was born in the summer of 2019 from this desire to serve, several of our local pastors, from numerous denominations, came together, identified community needs and organized volunteers to see if we could make an impact. Our first project wasn't even officially announced to the community, yet we had a group of volunteers who took a Sunday afternoon and built a handicap access ramp onto a home in rural Mercer County. Our first official workday saw 94 volunteers complete 14 different service projects. Truly a spirit of brotherly love shone on every face as we saw people serving and living out our motto; Neighbors Helping Neighbors. We have held semi-annual Serve Mercer County workdays, one in spring, and one in the fall of each year since our inception. Our most recent event saw over 20 distinct projects completed throughout Mercer County. Projects range from simple yard cleanup and maintenance to roofing repairs and light construction / remodeling. All of our labor is donated by volunteers and the cost of our projects almost exclusively underwritten by our generous donors.
Goals and objectives: We exist as an organization to serve our neighbors. Our objectives are few and simple to articulate, we want to make Mercer County a better place to live by being known as the kind of place where “Neighbors help neighbors”, the kind of place where we share one another’s burdens and always seek to help those who are elderly, less fortunate, or just simply in need due to physical or financial limitations. As we expand our focus and look to make larger impacts, our plans are to begin to offer our neighbors in need assistance in securing safe, structurally sound housing. We have become aware of several local veterans and families with disabilities who are in desperate need of replacement homes. As we partner with other organizations, both locally and globally, we hope to very soon be able to begin assisting in providing solutions for these and other families.
Our future: Now that we have formed as an officially recognized 501(c)(3), we are positioned to expand our effectiveness by working with donors and sponsors from throughout the region who can support our efforts while maximizing their giving within current tax guidelines. Our leadership team is highly skilled and equally motivated to change our county one household at a time as we Serve Mercer County.
